FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I BOOK IN TO SEE A PLAY THERAPIST?
We would love to hear from you. Please submit an online enquiry form for any queries you may have or to arrange an initial consultation.
The Process...
Initial Consultation
Before we start play therapy with your child, the Play Therapist will meet with the parents/carers without the child present. The intake session is an opportunity for the therapist to get an understanding of the issues and challenges being experienced and to set the stage for the therapeutic process to begin. A full history will also be taken. This is a great time for parents/carers to ask any questions they may have.
Time: 90 minutes

Individual Play Therapy Sessions:
A standard session is booked for 60 minutes each. Child sessions are 45 minutes in duration with session bookings allowing 15 minutes for pack up and clinical notes after your child has left. Sessions will be scheduled weekly and taking place at the same time each week.

After every 4 - 6 sessions the parents/carers and the therapist will meet for a parent consultation to discuss progress. This is an opportunity for discussion while ensuring the child’s confidentiality is upheld at all times. We do ask that in these parent consults, that children do not attend.

This cycle continues with every 4 - 6 sessions followed by a parent consultation. The length of the Play Therapy process varies in every case.

HOW IS THERAPY PROGRESS MEASURED AND COMMUNICATED?
The therapist will track the child’s progress through observing their themes and stages of play. A child will move through four stages of play before they transition out of play therapy, exploratory, aggressive, regressive and mastery. Progress is communicated through a face-to-face parent consultation every 4 – 6 weeks.
DO WE NEED A GP REFERRAL TO SEE A PLAY THERAPIST?
No, you can self-refer your child to play therapy. We take private clients, NDIS self-managed, plan-managed clients and government organisation referred clients.

MY CHILD HAS AN NDIS PLAN, HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Children with self-managed or plan managed NDIS plans can attend play therapy or our early intervention services and use their NDIS funding. Sessions will be invoiced in line with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. NDIS reports can also be issued for your child to provide evidence for NDIS reviews of their therapy progress and NDIS goals.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR PLAY THERAPY?
We most commonly provide play therapy services to children aged 2-12 years, however referrals for teenagers and adults are welcome.

CAN MY CHILD BENEFIT FROM PLAY THERAPY?
Research supports the effectiveness of play therapy with children experiencing a wide variety of social, emotional, behavioural, and learning problems including:
-
Anxiety
-
Family Separation
-
Trauma
-
ADHD
-
Autism Spectrum Disorder
-
Death / grief and loss
-
Chronic illness
-
Physical and/or sexual abuse
-
Domestic violence
-

-
Social / relationship issues

WILL PLAY THERAPY TEACH MY CHILD HOW TO PLAY?
This is a very common misconception. A child will not learn how to “play” during their therapy sessions as each child’s expression through play is individual. The therapist will follow the child’s lead and what they are representing in their play and language. This is why play therapy works as it allows all children to feel seen, heard and valued, building confidence and a sense of agency.
